Melatonin the little Skin Hero

Melatonin Skin Hero a very old but Modern Protector of Skin

Did you know that there are a couple of little edible plants, like feverfew, and St John’s wart, that contain this little skin hero?  It is one of the oldest remedies, and rarely used mighty ingredients, Melatonin.  Yes, we all know it helps us get a good night’s sleep, but I bet you didn’t know that it is a wonderful skin hero!

Did you know that all the enzymes necessary to manufacture melatonin can be found in the skin?  Within the skin, where the concentration of melatonin has been reported as several times greater than that of circulating plasma. Melatonin has vital responsibilities, such as acting as a protector against oxidative damage; prevention of proliferation of cancer cells; reducing inflammation; and promoting wound healing.

As we age, the amount of melatonin we produce decreases, as does the melatonin receptors. Since it performs so many functions within the skin. Fortunately, it has been observed that the topical application of melatonin to the skin can reverse many age-related declines.

ROS and Melatonin

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are chemically reactive chemical species containing oxygen. In a biological context, ROS are formed as a natural byproduct of the normal metabolism of oxygen and have important roles in cell signaling and homeostasis.

Due to environmental stressors i.e. UV and blue light and ozone, it is important to note that melatonin can, with its antioxidant activity, protect skin from these stressors.

G-protein pathways: In addition to melatonin’s direct antioxidant properties, it protects against ROS damage with its ability to activate the g-protein. Note: G-Protein coupled receptors (GPCRs) are a group of seven-transmembrane proteins that bind signal molecules outside the cell, transduce the signal into the cell and finally cause a cellular response.

As You can see, melatonin brings much to the table and is getting much attention from formulators. Its incredible ability to protect and heal the skin, and help prevent aging, brings this incredible skin “Hero” to the forefront for any and all formulators that have any clue about healing and protecting skin, to say nothing about its anti-aging effects.
